Visualization Atlases as Platforms for Data-Driven Exploration, Explanation, and Collaboration
Visualization Atlases are an emerging genre to make large complex data sets about complicated topics—climate change, development goals, armed conflit—accessible and understandable to a wide range of audiences. To that end, atlases are dynamic and open platforms including dashboards, interactive visualizations, data stories, and extended explanations, onboarding mechanisms, glossaries, and data download. We are working on better underanding this new form through surveys, design, and user-centered evaluation. Most recently, we launched the UK Co-Benefits Atlas with collaborators from the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute (ECCI) https://ukcobenefitsatlas.net/.
